The U.S. Military's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy repeal has just cleared its last congressional hurdle in the Senate! The President will sign the repeal into law this coming week.
This discriminatory law will be relegated to the dustbin of history, where it belongs. This stain on our nation will be lifted forever. We made it happen.
Today, America lived up to its highest ideals of freedom and equality, finally and not a moment too soon. Today, our federal government recognized that ALL men and women have the right to openly serve the country they believe in. Finally, it doesn't matter who you are, or who you love – you are not a second-class citizen.
Kids who are bullied for being different, who live in fear daily that their parents will hate them if they find out the truth are finally vindicated... Think of the relief, the empowerment, the sense of possibility they'll feel, knowing that the U.S. military has said that if you're lesbian or gay, you are worthy. We want you to join us, side by side, as equals.
Think of the people across the globe – some in countries where it is literally a life or death decision to come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender – who will hear this news and know we're one step closer toward a world where no one needs to live in fear because of who they are.
This is a watershed moment for the LGBT community. . . We will never go back.

Thanks Mr. Obama, I Guess. . .?
Tim --
Tonight marks the end of the American combat mission in Iraq.
As a candidate for this office, I pledged to end this war responsibly. And, as President, that is what I am doing.
Since I became Commander-in-Chief, we've brought home nearly 100,000 U.S. troops. We've closed or turned over to Iraq hundreds of our bases.
As Operation Iraqi Freedom ends, our commitment to a sovereign, stable, and self-reliant Iraq continues. Under Operation New Dawn, a transitional force of U.S. troops will remain to advise and assist Iraqi forces, protect our civilians on the ground, and pursue targeted counterterrorism efforts.
By the end of next year, consistent with our agreement with the Iraqi government, these men and women, too, will come home.
Ending this war is not only in Iraq's interest -- it is in our own. Our nation has paid a huge price to put Iraq's future in the hands of its people. We have sent our men and women in uniform to make enormous sacrifices. We have spent vast resources abroad in the face of several years of recession at home.
We have met our responsibility through the courage and resolve of our women and men in uniform.
In seven years, they confronted a mission as challenging and as complex as any our military has ever been asked to face.
Nearly 1.5 million Americans put their lives on the line. Many returned for multiple tours of duty, far from their loved ones who bore a heroic burden of their own. And most painfully, more than 4,400 Americans have given their lives, fighting for people they never knew, for values that have defined our people for more than two centuries.
What their country asked of them was not small. And what they sacrificed was not easy.
For that, each and every American owes them our heartfelt thanks.
Our promise to them -- to each woman or man who has donned our colors -- is that our country will serve them as faithfully as they have served us. We have already made the largest increase in funding for veterans in decades. So long as I am President, I will do whatever it takes to fulfill that sacred trust.
Tonight, we mark a milestone in our nation's history. Even at a time of great uncertainty for so many Americans, this day and our brave troops remind us that our future is in our own hands and that our best days lie ahead.
Thank you,
President Barack Obama

Republican Stupid
"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group. . . that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid." -- President Dwight D. Eisenhower (l952)

WOW! Talk about prescient and wrong at the same time! It is certainly so about the sad course of Eisenhower's own party. So much to say here. . . (for another time- plenty of that?).

A New START for a nuclear free world!
Hearings on New START, a treaty between the United States and Russia, are currently underway, and it is critical that Senators hear from their constituents, expressing strong support for its ratification. New START is expected to come up for ratification before the Senate's August recess.
The treaty is a critical, if modest, step towards the goal of nuclear disarmament. Unfortunately, the timing of the vote has made it an easy target for political opportunism. With the vote coming up right before the elections, many on the Right would deny President Obama the ratification of New START for their own political gain.
Peace Action would urge you to contact your Senators this week and ask them to do all that they can to make the New START Treaty a reality.
Please, take action to move one step closer to a nuclear-free world by 'clicking' on this link:

BP Purposefully Killing Sea Turtles in Gulf
Dear Friends,
News has just emerged from the Gulf Coast that BP is burning endangered sea turtles alive.
A boat captain who has been leading efforts to rescue the endangered turtles says BP has blocked his crews from entering the areas where the animals are trapped, effectively shutting down the rescue operation.
BP is using "controlled burns" to contain the oil spill. Shrimp boats create a corral of oil by dragging together fire-resistant booms and then lighting the enclosed "burn box" on fire. If turtles are not removed from the area before the fire is lit, they are literally burned alive.
Sign a petition telling BP to stop burning endangered sea turtles alive. To learn more and take action, click on the link below, NOW!

Veto Anti-Women's Healthcare: HB 1143 in Florida
Governor Christ,
Please, veto HB 1143, which outrageously restricts women's access to reproductive health care. HB 1143 interferes with private health care decisions between a woman and her doctor and restricts private health insurance from offering abortion coverage. HB 1143 was never vetted through a single committee in either the House or Senate, nor was any public comment allowed on the bill.
This legislation will result in more women receiving less health care and does nothing to prevent unintended pregnancy or reduce the need for abortion.
VETO HB 1143 NOW!. . . DO NOT let the right wing fringe throw our society back to the middle ages with their nonsensical nihilism. . .

Renew the Offshore Drilling Ban!
The ongoing oil spill tragedy, created by the negligence of British Petroleum (it could have been any major oil company) in the Gulf of Mexico makes it clear that industry cannot and chooses not to prevent environmental disaster. In BP world, it interferes with outrageously exhorbitant short term profits.

More Disgusting GOP Bullshit about the Poor!
Get this from THE STATE newspaper- unbelievable!!
A prominent local man said recently that giving poor people food was like "feeding stray animals".
That man was none other than Andre Bauer, who is running for the Republican nomination for Lt. Governor in, yes you guessed it- South Carolina! He made his remarks during a town hall meeting in Fountain Inn that included overly represented white state lawmakers and about 115 overly represented white constituents. It concerned government food assistance to poor people, mostly black in his state:
Note: In South Carolina, 58 percent of students participate in the free and reduced-price lunch program.
Bauer's remarks came during a speech in which he said government should take away assistance of children receiving food assistance during school hours if their parents didn't pass drug tests or attend parent-teacher conferences or PTA meetings.
"We can't afford to keep just giving money away." Bauer said, "They continue to have more and more kids, and the reward is there's more and more money in it for them."
-Totally for real- sad, sad sad. . .

Support S. 891 NOW
Please, contact your U. S. Senators to pass The Conflict Minerals Act of 2009!
It would direct the President with the force and influence of the United States within the United Nations Security Council to strengthen the UN's policy toward the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It will and investigate links between natural resources and the financing of illegal armed groups and impose sanctions.
The legislation would also direct the Secretary of State to work with nongovernmental organizations to provide strict guidance to companies involved with natural resources in the DRC.
A followup to Senate Resolution 713, sponsored by Sen. Nelson of Florida and passed unanimously by the Senate in 2008, this measure condemns the escalating violence in eastern DRC with penalties.
It is important for the United States to take a stand against these continuing atrocities by passing this Act.

Government and rebel forces in the DRC are engaged in a brutal conflict that, despite a peace deal, continues to terrorize innocent people and destabilize neighboring countries. Lives are endangered, sexual assaults continue, and hundreds of thousands of civilians are displaced.
The U.S. has a clear national security and moral interest in restoring stability in the Great Lakes region of Africa and promoting a democratic government in the DRC.
