Kudos to Fitzpatrick

Just a note of thanks to a prosecutor who has successfully taken out one of the legs that the thoroughly corrupt White House has stood on in its cynical duping of the American people. Mr. Libby, former top aid to VP Cheney, was convicted today of obstruction of justice, perjury, and lying to the FBI in a trial that went to the heart of the Bush administration's case for war in Iraq. It was all a lie folks, and the proof is in the great lengths that in particular the VP's office went to discredit factual evidence that the case for war was nonsense.

The rightwing scream machine has on cue gone into full attack mode. Repug apologists have saturated the airways with their vitriol against the prosecutor and the jury in the Libby case. Refusing to acknowledge the overwhelming evidence against Libby (and the VP) that a sympathetic jury has said they could not ignore, they instead have invented a vendetta conspiracy of liberals and an ignorant selfserving Fitzpatrick and jurors who 'just don't know the law', as the Mdm. De Farge of rightwing loyalists- former federal prosecutor and Democratic Party, Clinton hater Ms. Toensing said today on CNN. Funny, did these right wing cronies of the VP and Libby forget that Fitzpatrick is a longtime repug party hack and that the jurors were a group of highly educated, mostly non minority persons- hardly the makings of a liberal conspiracy.

As Fitzpatrick said today, a cloud hangs over the White House and the VP, but he remarked that it was hardly of his making but of their own. The implication being that there is much more there there, but that there was probably not a case that could be brought successfully against others high up in the White House, due no doubt to the utter secrecy and surround the wagons mentality of the Bush folks. As one juror in an interview soon after the verdict reflected about the jury's sentiments in the matter, that Libby was a likely 'fall guy' for the White House, and thus that many in the jury wondered why was not a case made against Karl Rove and others in the administration. It seems Fitzpatrick got what he could get, for now. . .

Anyway, it seems the anti-war political climate on Capitol Hill (and the country at large) will only intensify. There will be more hearings and investigations, and no doubt new impetus to bring the disasterous war in Iraq to and end. The times they are a changin' and blowin' in the wind is a newly emboldened anti-Bush administration disgust, and not a moment too soon!

Disproportionately Dead

An important study from New Hampshire's Carsey Institute, which specializes in studying rural America shows that our dead in Iraq are disproportionately from rural America. The death rate for soldiers from rural areas (only 24 per million adults aged 18 to 59) is 60% higher than the death rate for those soldiers from cities and suburbs. Vermont has the highest rate of casualties, followed by Delaware, South Dakota, and Arizona.

Evidence shows that the utter lack of opportunity in rural areas simply leaves more young people there with fewer alternatives to the military because of repug social policies. The opportunity differential between rural and urban America is higher now than at any time in the past. Also, only 1/10th of one percent (again overwhelmingly disproportionately rural!) of the population have served. No wonder it's been easy for so many Americans to ignore such a catastrophic war.

This illegal, ugly, deadly, incompetently run war has to end immediately!

A Quote for Thought

"It is against Stupidity in every shape and form that we have to wage our eternal battle. But how can we wonder at the want of sense on the part of those who have had no advantages, when we see such plentiful absence of that commodity on the part of those who have had all the advantages?" --William Booth (1829–1912; a British evangelist and founder of the Salvation Army.)

No Rational Iraq Policy to be Proposed by Bush

The White House on Thursday defended President George W. Bush's rare use of a body count to describe Iraqi insurgent deaths as a way to show Americans that U.S. troops are fighting hard in Iraq.

Bush said on Wednesday on a visit to the Pentagon that U.S. and Iraqi forces had killed or captured 5,900 of the enemy during the months of October, November and early December. It was a rare use of a body count by the president and came after public opinion polls said many Americans are concerned about rising U.S. casualties and believe the United States is losing the war in Iraq.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said one reason Bush gave the body count number was to offset concern about U.S. casualties and deaths that included 103 in October alone.

(Presidents have shied away from giving body count numbers ever since the practice was discredited during the Vietnam war. During the Vietnam War, the U.S. military publicized Vietnam body counts as a way to show progress, but it led to inflated numbers which damaged the Pentagon's credibility. Bush has not learned this lesson and seems intent on making it his part of his 'new' policy.)

But Bush is eager to show signs of progress at a time when Americans have become disenchanted with the Iraq war, and wants to demonstrate that his policy has not been stalled by his plans to change Iraq strategy early next year.

Bush is considering options ranging from a short-term increase in U.S. troop strength in Iraq to changing the mission there from fighting insurgents to supporting Iraqi forces.

----------------------------------------------

The Washington Post reported that the Joint Chiefs of Staff do not favor adding significant numbers of troops to Iraq. It is an option pushed by Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain. They instead want to strengthen the Iraqi army, somehow???

Their position is more in line with a recommendation from the bipartisan Iraq Study Group that proposed adding more U.S. trainers to Iraqi units and put the United States in position of withdrawing most combat troops from Iraq by early 2008. This is the position that the confused White House has badmouthed repeatedly over the last week- through 'strategic' leaks, of course.

Bush has refused to set a timetable for having U.S. troops out of Iraq, and it looks like he will continue to do so. Nixon redux!

A senior White House official said that while Bush knows the general strategic outlines of his policy, there are a lot of decisions with "significant strategic ramifications" yet to be made. Bush this week delayed announcing his new strategy from next week to early January. Obviously, the administration doesn't not have a clue- again!
